Apricot · Community orchard · Plum
📍 13650 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070, USA
🗓 Season: June · July · August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Apricot: Golden-orange colour all over; red blush is fine but green means unripe. Gives slightly under thumb pressure and separates cleanly from the pit. Sweet, floral aroma. Short window — harvest daily once they start colouring.
Plum: Colour fully develops (purple, red, or yellow by variety) and a waxy bloom appears on the skin. Softens slightly at the tip. Taste-test for sweetness — European plums are better slightly soft; Japanese types can be harvested firmer.
The Saratoga Heritage Orchard, "The apricot and plum orchard is maintained as a working example of Saratoga’s agricultural past to encourage citizens to value and respect the city's heritage. The 14 acres are presently maintained by the neighbor Novakovich family who have owned and managed local orchard properties since 1925."
Picking is not allowed (but not enforced), as the property is a city-owned area, and the fruit is predominantly harvested by volunteers for local food banks.
Saratoga residents can participate in organized picking, which is lottery-based and occurs a few weeks before the apricot season and a few weeks before the plum season.
Apricot trees are between the parking lot and the Sacred Heart Church. Plum trees face Fruitvale Ave.
