Hawthorn
📍 River Trail, Redmond, WA 98052, USA
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Deep red haws (berries) develop from green. Ripe when dark red and slightly soft. Edible raw but mealy — better for haw jelly, syrup, or wine. Contains a large stone. Improve after first frost.
Several Hawthorne trees accessible on the river trail. Most easily found by traveling through off-leash dog park and into the rivertrail. Some berries are in the brush but there is plenty to be had directly on path. Good bounty as of 9/21/20. Because this is so close to a dog park and salmon migration areas, I believe there is very few if any pesticides or herbicides used.
