🔍 When is it ripe?
Deep purple-black when ripe; intensely flavoured and juicy. Spread a tarp and shake the tree — ripe fruits fall immediately. Stains everything permanently — wear old clothes. Do not pick unripe red berries (mildly hallucinogenic).
This is a SPECTACULAR tree – actually, two of them. Even though it faces north, in mid-June the fruit was as delicious as I have ever tasted. You'll need to hop the fence (use the nearby park bench) to get the bulk of the harvest, but some are low enough to be gleaned by hand from the sidewalk.
