Barberry

📍 Unnamed Road, North Shields NE29 8NH, UK
Barberry
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, elongated, bright red berries with sharp spines on branches. Very tart; high in vitamin C. Ripe when uniformly red. Good for jam or as a souring agent (used in Persian cooking as zereshk).
May not be the exact spot as marked but in the car park of Rake Lane hospital there is at the time of writing, a barberry bush standing alone as a sort of landscape piece between the concrete.
