🌳
Pecan
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
The green husk splits into four sections and turns brown when ripe. Shake branches or wait for fall. Cure in a cool, dry place for 2–3 weeks. Kernels should be full and not shrivelled.
Pecans are prolific throughout the Candler Park neighborhood which was a pecan orchard in the early 1900s. It is possible to pick up pecans on the public sidewalks that have fallen from trees growing on private property. Some of the best pecan trees, however, are in Freedom Park near the intersection of Moreland and North Avenue. The trees produce every other year. I believe the fall of 2013 will be a producing year.
