🔍 When is it ripe?
Black raspberry: Deep purple-black, duller than blackberries. Separates from the hollow core like a red raspberry. Richer, more intense flavour than red raspberry. Short season — harvest daily.
Raspberry: Deep red (or gold/yellow for golden varieties) and slides off the receptacle — the hollow centre is the tell. Does not pull: a ripe raspberry separates at a touch. Extremely fragile; use within hours of picking.
Leave the Newville terminus of the rail trail, pass under the 533 bridge and the trail begins to the curve south. Red and black raspberries grow in huge numbers in the shade of the south side of the trail all the way to the when the trail emerges into a clearing.
