🌳
ginkgo
📍 2431 Joe Johnson Dr, Knoxville, TN 37996, USA
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Female trees only: fleshy, apricot-like fruit falls when ripe, emitting a very unpleasant rancid-butter smell. Wear gloves — the outer flesh causes dermatitis. The inner nut is edible; roast or boil after removing shells. Limit intake (toxins at high dose).
Ginkgo trees along the plant sciences building. Their seed is a culinary delicacy, used like a nut. The flesh around the seed smells horrible and causes blisters and rashes like poison ivy. Don't harvest the fruits, remove the flesh immediately, wearing gloves. The seeds are poisonous raw, so make sure to cook or roast them properly.
Harvest the seeds in the fall or early winter.
