Crabapple
📍 12, 14 Macon Ct, Crewe CW1 6EA, UK
🗓 Season: August · September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small apples ripen from green to red, yellow, or orange by variety. Very tart raw but excellent for jelly and cider. Ripe when the colour is fully developed and the fruit lifts off with a gentle twist.
Crabapple trees - a few of them, relatively easy to reach, with good quantities of fruit, on the lefthand side of the road, just opposite McDonalds and a little further up. Apples are small, hard-skinned and sour; however, though unsuitable for eating, they can be used to make crabapple jam or jelly - as the fruit has a high pectin content - or can otherwise be used in cooking.
