Shagbark hickory
📍 139 Hood Ln, Frankford, ON K0K 2C0, Canada
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
A mature grove of shagbark hickories can be found here, many of them overhanging onto the publicly owned Lower Trent Trail. There's also some bitternut hickories though, so be careful to distinguish them when gathering nuts.
