🔍 When is it ripe?
Elongated green husks turn brown-black and fall. Wear gloves — stains like black walnut. Cure for 2–3 weeks. Mild, oily, and buttery — not as strong as black walnut.
Medium sized butternut along the Rochester, Syracuse and Eastern trail. About 150 yards south of the bridge that connects to the canal trail. No nuts in the tree this year (2023) but I found several old nuts on the ground below.
