Loquat

📍 Alexandria Louisiana
Loquat Private but overhanging
🗓 Season: March · April · May
🔍 When is it ripe?
Clusters of orange-yellow fruit; ripe when fully orange with no green, yields to gentle pressure, and comes off the stem with a slight tug. Very sweet and aromatic when right — mealy if overripe. Short shelf life after picking.
A large Japanese plum or loquat resides next to 6th and Elliott Streets. I saw hundreds of Cedar waxwings feasting on the fruit this spring (April 2013).
