🌰
Black walnut
📍 36 Raymond Rd, Salem, MA 01970, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
This black walnut tree is growing along the bike path opposite a Salem State building. The walnuts (which look like limes) could possibly be reached with a ladder, but there are also fallen walnuts that you can collect from the ground.
