🗓 Season: June · July · August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis): Deep purple-black; pulls free from the hollow centre. Strongly flavoured. Picks over about two weeks — check every couple of days.
Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus): Deep black and pulls free with zero resistance. Juicy and sweet; no red remaining at the core. Harvest in the morning when cool.
Red raspberry: Bright red and detaches from the core plug with no resistance. Fragrant and very soft when ripe. Autumn-fruiting varieties produce a second flush in September–October.
I have foraged all sorts of blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry from this area, and I have even seen wild grape vines in years past. The canes here are upright and very spiky, so it can be difficult to get to the fruit from the path.
