Chokecherry

📍 2612 Denver Ave, Longmont, CO 80503, USA
Chokecherry Public
🗓 Season: July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small clusters ripen from red to very dark purple-black. Intensely astringent until fully dark; seeds and leaves contain hydrocyanic acid — cook or dry before eating in quantity. Best for jams and syrups.
Chokecherry plants can be found all along the south side of 17th between Harvard and Hover on public land outside the sound fence. This land is watered by the town and so the plants grow abundantly. I would avoid plants closer the intersection with Hover, which experiences heavy traffic volume and thus air pollution.
