🔍 When is it ripe?
Ripe dates turn from yellow (khalal stage — crunchy, slightly tart) to amber-brown (rutab — soft and sweet) to dark and wrinkled (tamr). Harvest large clusters of rutab-stage dates when they turn caramel colour and yield to pressure.
Dates on the palm trees periodically show up. The date trees run from the corner of Haven Avenue and Foothill Boulevard all the way past the Active Ride Shop through the entire parking lot. They're even in the back side of Jasmin Spa & Massage. Some taste and are like golden graham's cereal, others are extremely dry - making a great substitute for brown sugar.
These need a tarp and large containers - because the fruit can fly everywhere if not careful! Watch out for it falling on cars - go where there's no cars.
