🔍 When is it ripe?
Background skin colour shifts from green toward yellow; seeds turn brown when ripe. Fruit separates from the spur with a gentle upward twist. Aroma develops near the base. Wild Malus fruit is often small and tart — excellent for cider and jelly.
A few trees living along the east side of the Metra train embankment, on Ravenswood just north of Lawrence. Plenty of green fruit; good for compotes, jelly, or baking bread or cobblers. Use a lot of sweetener as they are sour.
