🍎
Apple (Malus pumila 'Granny Smith') · Pear · Quince
📍 43 Carlisle St, Bergenfield, NJ 07621, USA
🗓 Season: August · September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Pear: Unlike apples, pears ripen from the inside out. Harvest when the skin colour lightens and the fruit separates with a gentle upward twist. Ripen off the tree at room temperature — leave on a counter until the neck yields to thumb pressure.
Quince: Yellow, fragrant, and very hard when ripe — not soft like apples. Look for a deep golden-yellow colour and a strong quince aroma. Inedible raw (very astringent); excellent for jam, paste, and jelly after cooking.
As you walk up the sloping pathway from Cooper's Pond towards the cluster of red painted historical buildings (barn etc) at the top of the hill, to your right is a lawn with several fruit trees. At the bottom, closest to the pond, is a very large apple tree. Further up the hill you will find green pears (possibly Bartlett?) and quince. In August I have enjoyed the (still very small) green apples on my walks, but found the pear and quince not yet mature. In years past the quince have gotten to decent size though I dont reca how big the other fruit gets.
