🗓 Season: July · August · April · May · June
🔍 When is it ripe?
Currant: Red: translucent, jewel-like clusters. White: pale cream. Both are ripe when fully coloured and hang as a bunch. Tart and high in pectin — best for jelly and summer pudding. Harvest the whole strig.
Strawberry: Uniformly red with no white or green at the tip or shoulder. Strong strawberry fragrance even from a distance. Cap leaves (calyx) are fresh and green. Completely red flesh inside when cut. Wild strawberries are smaller but more intensely flavoured.
Park in the parking area at the top of the hill and walk down the steps. The huckleberries are not far from the shore near the picnic benches and underneath the canopy of the pine trees. The strawberries are more inland along the trail near the huckleberry patch. The currant bush is on the shore. The huckleberries are small but extremely flavorful and plentiful. The strawberries are the tiniest strawberries I've ever seen in my life but they taste like candy. You must eat them on site because they won't survive the trip out of the park. I did not see the currant bush blooming when I was there but it was young so it might be by now. Bring a bucket, copious amounts of bug spray, and watch out for bears!!! This is a state park so you will need to have cash to pay the entrance fee (I think it's $10).
