🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
The tree is in the front yard of duplex on private property, but overhangs the sidewalk. In the past, walnuts not picked off the ground have been raked up with the fallen leaves by the homeowner and placed in lawn refuse bags at the curb. The husks of these nuts are soft.
