🔍 When is it ripe?
Small apples ripen from green to red, yellow, or orange by variety. Very tart raw but excellent for jelly and cider. Ripe when the colour is fully developed and the fruit lifts off with a gentle twist.
Medium- to large-sized crab apple tree hanging over the beginning of the bridge and the steps down to the station. Apples are small, hard, green-skinned with brown blotches when ripe and roughly pear-shaped.
Not eating apples! Crab apples are small, hard, and high in pectin, which is what makes jam act like jam. They vary in whether they're sweet or sour. If they're astringent, they'll probably make better wine than jam, as astringent crab apples are high in tannins.
Access is relatively easy, though some of the apples further down the steps may be at dog height, and thus I wouldn't pick them. Some of the apples hang over the other side of the railing, so you may need some kind of tool to pick them.
Though there is railing, the steps don't have much grip and can get slippy when it rains, so watch yourself if you think this will be an issue.
