🍎
Apple · Plum · Sour cherry
🗓 Season: August · September · October · November · June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Apple: Background colour changes from green to yellow or cream (variety determines final colour). Seeds inside should be brown. Flesh yields slightly to thumb pressure. A ripe apple releases with a gentle upward twist — no pulling. Check the ground for natural drops.
Plum: Colour fully develops (purple, red, or yellow by variety) and a waxy bloom appears on the skin. Softens slightly at the tip. Taste-test for sweetness — European plums are better slightly soft; Japanese types can be harvested firmer.
Sour cherry: Bright to deep red, slightly translucent. Firmer than sweet cherries when ripe. Strong tart flavour — avoid if still pale or streaked green. Harvest before birds; fruits hang briefly after colouring.
The St. Francis Seminary has a number of fruit trees that go unharvested. Talk to the groundskeeper if you're nervous about simply harvesting, but he had no problem with us collecting the fruit, probably less mess for him to clean up later. The plum trees are around the back by the convent.
